Why Men Don't Get Mental Health Help — And What Actually Works

I'm going to say something most mental health organizations won't: the system is not built for men. I know because I needed it and it didn't work for me. In December 2022, I was a Deutsche Bank MD, a Davos speaker, co-founder of the world's first impact investing bank — and I was losing 30 pounds, couldn't sleep, and completely isolated myself from everyone I loved. I didn't call a therapist. I called a friend. That friend saved my life.
The Real Numbers on Men's Mental Health
30.5% of American men experience symptoms of depression or anxiety (CDC). Only 14.6% seek any mental health support. Men are 4x more likely to die by suicide than women. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 45. Men have significantly fewer close friendships than women and weaker social support networks. Loneliness affects men disproportionately — and loneliness is as dangerous to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. These gaps represent millions of lives at risk.
Why Standard Therapy Fails Men
Traditional mental health care asks you to recognize you're struggling, admit it, call a stranger, sit across from them, talk about your feelings, and pay $200 per session, weekly. For many men — especially those in high-performance environments, or raised to see vulnerability as weakness — this model creates more barriers than it removes. Men connect side by side, not face to face. We open up when we're moving, doing, being — not when we're being interrogated. The model that saved my life wasn't sitting across from someone. It was walking with someone.
What THE REAL Has Learned Actually Works
Movement: REAL Walks happen every Thursday at 7AM in cities across the country. Men who would never sit in a therapy chair will walk. Something about motion lowers defenses. Peer honesty: REAL Talks are events where men tell their real stories — not the highlight reel, the actual version. Hearing another man say 'I was broken too' is more powerful than any clinical intervention. Low-friction entry: Everything THE REAL does is free. No appointment, no intake form, no insurance. Just show up. The sponsor model: someone who checks in, shows up, asks hard questions, and refuses to let you disappear — formalized in THE REAL App, which connects men with peer mental health buddies. Community, not just treatment: with 1,200+ members across 60+ countries, belonging is itself mental health medicine.
